What began as a conversation between a husband and wife as they drove past a vacant building, has evolved into a new Farm Feed Store in Connell.
Moises Magana shared the story with us. “I was driving by the US Bank and told Jodi [his wife] ‘You know what? This US Bank will be great for a feed store because it’s right by the highway and Connell doesn’t have one’ and all the farmers around here need to go to Ranch and Home, or Basin Feed, drive 40 minutes to get their stuff. “How nice would it be to have something like that here in town?” They were considering the idea further when two or three weeks later, Dale Kuehny expressed his desire to “kinda retire” from the family’s business, The Old Brick Store downtown.
Moises and Jodi decided they would buy his share of the business which prompted Moises to put out his idea of a feed store and expanding the downtown business to include a section for one. It was well received and things started moving, literally, as the store’s layout and products were rearranged to make way for the new feed store.
It took a little time to find the right supplier and offer the community a good price.
Moises shared, “I feel like this is what our community needs, in a way, because while Ace had this very small section, it’s also very expensive. We’re trying to keep the prices as low as possible... We’re just trying to be very mindful of that.” He shared that their prices are comparable to Ranch and Home and Basin Feed and that their chicken feed is actually cheaper.
A soft opening of the Feed Store was held on March 7, despite the fact that they were waiting for more products to arrive. He said, people had been asking and so they went for it. The community was very supportive and welcoming.
“A lot of my friends, they already came and bought a lot of minerals, chicken feed, and a lot of stuff,” Moises said, “I have a lot of friends who are small farmers and this is good for them. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to help them and also help me, you know.”
The Feed Store currently offers five or six different kinds of horse feed, alfalfa pellets, sweet grain mix, cracked corn - premium, gold feed. A lot of different types of minerals. Water troughs, feeders, water feeders. Chicken products including growers, and feed. They even offer organic feed.
The store also offers cat and dog food and snacks.
They do want to keep adding more products and enhance the store to serve the community even better as they go along.
