Franklin County to host USDA Rural Development Director

Pasco, WA - The Franklin County Board of Commissioners announced they will be hosting Washington State USDA Rural Development Director, Kirk Pearson, with local officials and community stakeholders on Wednesday, June 25. The visit aims to explore potential partnerships and identify opportunities for Franklin County to utilize USDA-Rural Development programs and funding to enhance local infrastructure, foster economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents, a press release on the meeting stated.
USDA Rural Development provides loans, grants, and loan guarantees to support economic development and improve the quality of life in rural areas across the United States. Its programs address a wide range of needs including essential community facilities, housing, business development, and vital infrastructure such as water, sewer, and broadband.
Franklin County Commissioners commented on the visit. “We are incredibly excited and honored to welcome Director Pearson to Franklin County,” Commissioner and Chairman of the Board Clint Didier said, “We welcome Mr. Pearson and his staff at USDA Rural Development, and we look forward to finding ways to partner together for the betterment of the people of Franklin County.”
Commissioner Rocky Mullen agreed, saying, “This visit represents a significant opportunity to showcase our community’s vision and challenges directly to federal partners. We are eager to learn more about the specific programs and funding available through USDA Rural Development that can help us achieve our goals for growth and a stronger future for all Franklin County Residents.”
“Building strong relationships with federal agencies like USDA Rural Development is vital for our county’s progress,” Commissioner Stephen Bauman added, “We believe this meeting will pave the way for meaningful investments in our rural areas, addressing key infrastructure gaps and supporting our local economy.”
Director Pearson’s visit comes at a vital time in Franklin County with growth in our county expanding and issues like housing, infrastructure, and the closure of Lamb Weston in Connell. This visit also addresses the need for good internet services across the rural county to support families, education, and businesses.
Director Pearson will facilitate direct dialogue between USDA Rural Development and Franklin County leadership, focusing on how federal resources can be strategically deployed to meet the unique needs and priorities of the county. Discussions are expected to cover potential funding avenues for critical projects, including but not limited to:
Broadband Expansion - enhancing access to high-speed internet in underserved areas.
Infrastructure Development- improving water and wastewater systems, and other essential public utilities.
Community Facilities - upgrading and constructing facilities that provide essential public services like healthcare, public safety, and education.
As well as Rural Business Support - providing capital and technical assistance to stimulate local businesses and create job opportunities.
The discussion will take place during the commission's regular meeting on Wednesday, June 25, beginning at 9am. These meetings are open to the public and held in the Commissioners Meeting Room at the Franklin County Courthouse as well as livestreamed on the county website and through Franklin County’s YouTube channel.
